When the popularity of "Muscovites" in the domestic and international market gradually declined, the designers of MZMA took up the development of a new and improved model. The car with the index 2140 is a successfully upgraded variation of the Moskvich 412. At the same time, the exterior design of the body has noticeably changed, and the main technical equipment and the general structure of the body have remained the same.

A recognizable part of this car is the radiator grille, which is made not of chrome-plated material, but of black plastic. The headlights have a rectangular shape and do not protrude forward, as in many models of Soviet cars. The rear wings of the Moskvich have additional decorative grilles, and there are no tail fins.

The interior has also undergone certain changes: the dashboard has become more injury-proof, and the seats have been supplemented with comfortable soft headrests.
