In 2002, the Hummer H2 SUV debuted, a smaller (3,900 kg) and less expensive version of the original model. The Hummer has become a symbol of America's supersized lifestyle;

Instead of a turbo-diesel engine with high torque, as in the H1 Alpha, the H2 gets a 6.0-liter V8 Vortec gasoline engine developing 325 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The four-speed automatic transmission includes towing mode.

The BorgWarner all-wheel drive system includes a low range. It provides 40/60 percent torque separation between the front and rear in High Open mode, which changes by 50/50 percent when the transfer case differential is locked. Five all-wheel drive modes are electronically controlled. The 33-1 crawl ratio is available for serious rock climbing.

An anti-lock braking system with traction control is included as standard. There are no side airbags.
